As a Surface Pro xl tablet user, I can assure you that if they lost the portability (wifi), you will be quite sorry.
It's a touchscreen AND a big keyboard too so when you write long texts it's much more convenient, but if you want to plug in things, forget about it.
And they add a little dongle, so you must already have some dongles on your laptop, so the Windows device might be more convenient but it's not that important... If it's really a problem, you might just get a little USB "hub" from a friend and plug it in and if you need a docking station you can always add it on the Surface.
Someday when you are having the time, you should check it out. (How do I get to it?) There was a pretty good writeup on it in the New York Times. It is a bit heavy, but hey, you can leave it at home if you don't need it.
I'm sure that the device that could charge a tablet at home is probably very convenient in your house at the office. It is however, what you have said you want. I don't see how this device could not be more portable in the future.
